This photo of a young monk was a finalist in the Nat Geo Travel Photographer Awards, but I’m afraid it’s not as authentic as it might seem. If you google „monk, Myanmar, book” you will see hundreds of very similar photos – the same light, the same setup, maybe even the same boy. To make a long story short, what at first seemed like a lucky opportunity for genuine portraiture turned out to be a paid conveyor belt for completely stage-managed photos.

There was even an assistant working outside whose job it was to constantly fill the interior with smoke by lighting incense sticks, much like a film set.
